The branding never stops

The United States is celebrating 250 years of independence this July, a milestone honoring the idea that no single man should dominate an entire nation. To mark the occasion, President Donald Trump has put his own face on the passport.

On Friday, Trump unveiled the new commemorative passport on Truth Social with a message only he could have written.

“The U.S.A.’s New Passport, which says, ‘Welcome, but be good!’ President DJT.”

Open the passport and there he is.

Trump appears inside the cover, positioned above the Resolute Desk, with the text of the original Declaration of Independence spread behind him and his signature placed beneath the image. The Founding Fathers, meanwhile, were moved to the opposite page.

Trump is the first living president ever to appear inside a U.S. passport, a distinction that, depending on your politics, looks either like a patriotic tribute or another unmistakable display of personal branding. The redesign is officially part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration, and the State Department insists all of the passport’s security features remain intact.

Fortunately for frequent travelers, the redesign is mostly aesthetic.

The rollout also comes as the United States hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with hundreds of thousands of international visitors arriving throughout the tournament. That makes Trump’s message, “Welcome, but be good,” sound as though it is aimed squarely at foreigners entering the country.

Except that is not how passports work.

A U.S. passport is issued to American citizens for international travel. It is not a visa, a green card, or a document used to admit foreign visitors into the United States. In practical terms, the people reading Trump’s message are overwhelmingly Americans leaving the country, not tourists arriving.

The commemorative edition will be produced in a limited run of between 25,000 and 30,000 passports. Each will remain valid for ten years and will be available through the Washington Passport Agency to eligible American citizens who apply.

It also fits neatly into a much broader Trump branding campaign.

His name has already appeared on the U.S. Institute of Peace, savings accounts for children known as “Trump Accounts,” the government’s prescription drug website TrumpRX, and the Trump Visa card for immigrants.
