Donald Trump’s legal team on Saturday presented the public with such a shit sandwich that they seem to have inadvertently strengthened the Democratic impeachment managers’ calls for evidence and witnesses to be allowed. The argument from Trump’s team was that there were no eyewitnesses for the Democrats’ case. But it’s obviously difficult to hear from witnesses if Trump has obstructed them from testifying.
“The president’s counsel did something that they did not intend: They made a really compelling case for why the Senate should call witnesses and documents,” Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer told reporters.
Toward the end of the Senate impeachment trial on Saturday, attorney Mike Purpura told a glaringly blatant falsehood lie in defense of the newly impeached “president.” Purpura claimed that officials in Ukraine were not aware that Trump was withholding the aid in question until at some point after the government helped him by announcing an investigation into Trump’s rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. If you’ve been following this story, you already know that is patently false. Trump’s controversial phone call with Ukraine’s president was the catalyst for the impeachment inquiry.
MSNBC host Brian Williams proved that Purpura lied by airing a clip featuring Defense Department official Laura Cooper, who testified under oath that Ukrainians were asking about the delay on the very day of Trump’s controversial July 25th phone call.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff responded to Trump’s attorneys’ defense saying they are distorting the truth.

Lies, deflection, and distraction are all they have left after impeachment managers presented a solid case for convicting Donald J. Trump. Republicans likely won’t convict and remove their unhinged “president” but history is going to take a massive dump all over the GOP.
