The tone never changes

Donald Trump’s Memorial Day began with a 206-word sentence, a new nickname for the Democratic Party and a list of Republicans he considers losers. The holiday’s actual subject arrived briefly, in the second post, before Trump moved on.

The first post landed at 6:10 a.m. and covered considerable ground. Trump named senators Thom Tillis and Bill Cassidy, called congressman Thomas Massie “a major sleazebag” and accused Democrats of being “constantly critical of each and every fantastic win I have.” He then wrapped it up: “These people should go home and rest, they do nothing but create division and loss. In other words, they are losers!”

Eight minutes later came the holiday greeting. “Happy Memorial Day to all, including the Dumocrats, who disrespect our Military and all of the tremendous success that it has had over the last year. God Bless those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. I love you all! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

A third post closed the morning: “The Dumocrats have BAD POLICY, AND BAD CANDIDATES. Other than that, they are doing quite well! President DJT.”

One detail hangs over all of it. Trump avoided military service entirely through five deferments in the 1960s, four academic and one for bone spurs that his own doctor’s daughter later said were fabricated as a favor to his father.

The Republicans he later attacked, Tillis, Cassidy and Massie, had all questioned the Iran war, a conflict that has now killed thirteen American service members.

The internet was not exactly gentle about it.

Memorial Day was established after the Civil War to honor those who died in uniform.
