West Point Cadets Seemingly React With Silence When Trump Announces His Birthday During Commencement Speech

Well, this is awkward.

Donald Trump tried to use the West Point graduation ceremony this weekend to promote his June 14th birthday for applause and the cadets were having none of it.

Earlier this year, Trump announced that he would be delivering the commencement address at West Point because he had been invited to do so, a claim that former West Point graduate Will Goodwin refuted. Of course, Trump’s announcement forced the military academy to call back 1,000 cadets to be in attendance, many of whom ended up testing positive for the coronavirus before graduation day even arrived.

Well, the day finally did arrive over the weekend and Trump predictably tried to hijack it to promote himself and his partisan agenda.

By far the most narcissistic moment came when Trump attempted to elicit applause from the cadets for his birthday.

“Tomorrow, America will celebrate a very important anniversary — the 245th birthday of the US Army. Unrelated, it’s going to be my birthday also. I don’t know if that happened by accident,” Trump said, pausing briefly in the vain hope that the cadets would cheer.

However, despite earlier applause after other parts of his speech, Trump received only silence before moving on with his tail tucked between his legs.

“But it’s a great day because of that Army birthday,” he said.

Here’s the video:

This had to be embarrassing for Trump. He hoped the cadets would give him a campaign ad moment, only to be humiliated with deafening silence from unimpressed cadets. He tried to hijack this special day from West Point cadets and make it about himself. He should be ashamed. But we all know he’s just going to throw a fit because he got burned.
