Donald Trump said on the campaign trail that he would surround himself with “only with the best and most serious people,” but the revolving door just outside the White House tells another story. Trump’s incompetence is on display on a daily basis, including today when President Stable Genius lashed out at Democrats while misspelling coronavirus and choking on Twitter.
Trump supporters give their president a pass on his ridiculously stupid errors, but all of this matters, from the lack of expertise in his administration to his butchering of the English language. After all, he’s occupying the highest seat in the land.
The only issue that matters to Trump is that those in his orbit show loyalty to him.
Politico reports that the White House is hiring a 23-year-old college student to be what the news outlet describes as “one of the top officials in its powerful Presidential Personnel Office.”

James Bacon, a senior at George Washington University, is acting as one of the right-hand men to 29-year-old PPO director John McEntee, according to what officials told Politico. The 23-year-old is pursuing a bachelor’s degree and appears to be tasked with helping McEntee purge Trump appointees who are deemed as not loyal enough to the insecure president.
Bacon had a brief gig with the Department of Transportation, where he worked in the policy shop. And before that role, while Bacon was still taking classes, he worked at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This is not the first example of Trump or his administration brandishing their ability to lift inferior loyalists, weaponizing capriciousness and arbitrariness as an expression of power. As the Post pointed out in 2018, just one year into the Trump presidency, the Presidential Personnel Office ‘has served as a refuge for young campaign workers, a stopover for senior officials on their way to other posts and a source of jobs for friends and family… One senior staffer has had four relatives receive appointments through the office.’ Unsurprisingly, the office, which served as the epicenter of graft and gifting political jobs, was also an island of privileged, misfit toys with dubious personal histories.”
On Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that the “USA is in great shape!” while the Dow Jones has been tumbling for days amid the coronavirus outbreak. In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command. Trump killed the pandemic response system because it was established during the Obama administration. We are not in “great shape,” America, and this guy is hiring college students.
