There’s really no denying that ex-President Donald Trump has been in a manic and extremely public mental meltdown for several weeks, with regard to the numerous, neverending probes, investigations, and lawsuits that continue to mount and threaten to drown him — and with this newest development, that sense of panic he’s experiencing right now is rightfully placed.

MSNBC columnist Steve Benen broke the bombshell news today that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has formally tapped none other than former Justice Department official and veteran Matthew Colangelo to likely become the lead investigator in the ongoing criminal investigation into the scandal-ridden former president, which will likely serve as a revitalized jump start to the Manhattan DA’s criminal probes that had seemingly begun to stall out — likely leaving the former president in an almost unbearable state of panic, as he undoubtedly also believed that Bragg’s probe was going to be a nothing burger in the end.

“But what Colangelo’s record notable is not just that he was the #3 official at Main Justice,” Benen wrote in his bombshell new column. “This same prosecutor helped lead the investigation that led to the shutdown of Trump’s fake charitable foundation. Colangelo also helped lead the investigation that resulted in the New York attorney general’s office filing a quarter-billion-dollar case against the former president and three of his adult children.”

The former president has been engaged in a deeply angry, unhinged rage against New York prosecutors on his struggling Truth Social platform for quite literally days now, and we can’t help but wonder if Trump’s public breakdown is stemming, at least in part, from the hiring of Colangelo.

“The district attorney’s office has an experienced new prosecutor with a keen understanding of the former president’s dealings — as that same office investigates Trump’s hush-money scandal and allegedly fraudulent business practices,” Benen writes. “In light of Colangelo’s new gig, it’s hardly a stretch to think Trump will publishing quite a few related missives in the coming months.”
