The most surprising story in politics in recent weeks has been Donald Trump vs. the Reflecting Pool’s algae.

Heading into the nation’s 250th birthday, the president decided to give the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool a makeover at a cost of $16.4 million. However, it hasn’t gone according to plan, which, per the New York Times, has led to “blooms of green algae and the peeling polyurethane.”

Trump has claimed that the discoloration of the pool is the result of sabotage and vandalism. And while there have been some arrests, there remains little evidence that the vandals were involved in the pool’s current condition.

This week, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins strongly debunked the president’s position on the algae question.

“They cut it up good,” Trump said of the vandals, per The Daily Beast. “And then they cut it 200, 350-foot slips in the form of lots of little slips, a real horrible stuff.”

“Collins pointed out that Trump has provided no pictures or video to back up his claim,” the Beast said of Collins’ segment. “She then reminded the president that he said in May that it would be impossible to cut the lining—chips of which are visible inside the pool—with a knife.”

“This will last for at least 50 years,” Trump said in early May of the pool. “You’ll never have a leak. It’s very strong. You couldn’t, if you had a knife—I don’t want to give anybody ideas—if you had a knife, you can’t even cut it. So strong, so powerful, it’s like powerful rubber. It is beautiful. Sealed.”
The Beast also noted that there’s been another terrible effect: Dead ducklings.

“The project now has a waterfowl body count, with a dead duckling spotted floating in the putrid green water on Sunday. Two other dead ducks, one adult and one juvenile, were also found on Sunday at a pond on the Constitution Gardens on the National Mall—about 250 feet from the Reflecting Pool.”
