Melania Trump has spoken out for the first time about the attempted assassination of her husband, Donald Trump, and the terror she felt realizing that she and their son Barron’s lives were on the verge of a “devastating change.”

The former First Lady referred to the gunman as a ‘monster’ and recounted the moment she witnessed the bullet strike her husband’s ear during a Pennsylvania rally attended by many of his supporters. Seeing that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, made me realize how close we came to a devastating change in our lives. I am deeply thankful to the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who risked their lives to protect him.

Trump’s campaign reported that during the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, Trump was grazed by a bullet on his right ear. He was not seriously injured.

The Secret Service confirmed that one rally attendee was killed, and two others were injured in the shooting. The shooter, identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed by the Secret Service moments after he attempted to assassinate the presumptive GOP nominee.
