Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has found himself on the short end of quite a few jokes surrounding his name over the past few years. Honestly, I really thought the ol’ “Moscow Mitch” moniker was going to be the one that stuck. But as it turns out, the turtle in an ill-fitting suit just got himself a shiny, new label, and social media users are eating it up.

While sitting in on a panel discussion on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360°, world-renowned former Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein referred to the Senate Majority Leader as “Midnight Mitch.”

The panel discussion was focused on McConnell’s recent attempt to compress the Senate impeachment trial’s proceedings so tightly that many of the testimonies regarding the Ukraine scandal wouldn’t take place until the wee hours of the morning — almost undoubtedly an attempt on Mitch’s part to prevent as many people as possible from bearing witness to what was revealed in said testimonies.

“The most important moment for the Republican Party since the censure of Joe McCarthy and the impeachment and resignation of Richard Nixon, in which Republicans became great heroes and patriots,” Bernstein stated during the discussion. “Now, we’re looking at ‘Midnight Mitch’ and the so-called world’s greatest deliberative body really embracing a cover-up that is there for all to see. That’s what this is about. It’s about preventing information from becoming known and seen by the American public.”

The famous Watergate reporter went on to point out that during the past impeachments of both former presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton there was “no problem about knowing the truth of the facts.”

But when it comes to the impeachment of Donald Trump, he noted, “We still have a factual problem here because the president and those who work for him and Mitch McConnell have impeded the facts from the beginning.”

Unsurprisingly so, it didn’t take long at all for the new nickname to gain traction on Twitter, with people utilizing the hashtag in their critical tweets against the Kentucky Senator:

I look forward to seeing him try to weasel his way out of this one.
