The G7 side quest

Majed AlFarsi had one question about the Strait of Hormuz and one unexpected detour before he could ask it, because Trump took one look at him and forgot what press conferences are for.

The exchange happened during Tuesday’s bilateral meeting between Trump and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the G7 sidelines. AlFarsi, a political anchor with Sky News Arabia since 2012, had barely raised his hand when Trump turned to Sheikh Mohamed.

“What a nice-looking person. Is he from your country?” he asked.

Sheikh Mohamed confirmed that he was.

“He’s got such a nice way about him,” Trump continued. “My people are so mean.”

Then, as if completing a thought: “Handsome guy. Could put him in a movie right now.”

Sheikh Mohamed leaned toward AlFarsi with a warning.

“Be careful!”

The room laughed. AlFarsi smiled and waited. When Trump finally let him speak, he replied:

“Thank you, Mr. President.”

Majed eventually got his Strait of Hormuz question out, but the compliment had already taken over the room. AlFarsi later shared clips of the exchange on Instagram, where people across the UAE celebrated the unexpected praise.

Online, people had plenty to say:

Trump’s treatment of foreign reporters he likes has often looked very different from his treatment of American journalists.

He has called Kaitlan Collins “the worst reporter” and said he sees “hatred in her eyes,” told a Bloomberg reporter to be “quiet, piggy,” and described New York Times reporter Katie Rogers as “ugly, both inside and out.”

Appearance comments have become a recurring part of Trump’s public appearances. At a Coast Guard graduation in May, he paused during the ceremony and told an approaching male student, “I hate good-looking men.” When another student walked up, Trump added: “Look at the muscles on this guy! I just hit him on the shoulder and hurt my hand, it’s like hitting a rock!”

He made a similar comment during a White House peace signing ceremony when he called Angolan reporter Hariana Verás “Beautiful — and you’re beautiful inside.” Trump later acknowledged that Karoline Leavitt had warned him not to say it because it was “politically incorrect.” He said it anyway.
