The United States is grieving over the loss of a towering figure of the American civil rights movement Friday, but even with Rep. John Lewis’ death at 80 years old, the term “good trouble” will live on forever. Lewis, the son of sharecroppers, is a civil rights icon who survived a brutal beating by police officers during the 1965 march in Selma, Alabama. Lewis became known as the conscience of Congress, and our nation’s loss of this figure who dedicated his life to nonviolent activism will go down in the history books and remembered as a great man — a legend unless you’re Donald J. Trump, who is busy golfing.
The Twitter-addicted president has failed to release a tweet to soothe a grieving nation.
The president has arrived at his Virginia golf club.
He has not tweeted so far this morning. He and the WH have not yet acknowledged the passing of @repjohnlewis— Kelly O’Donnell (@KellyO) July 18, 2020
What a disgrace.
President Trump has posted 35 tweets or retweets since news of John Lewis’s passing broke and hasn’t once acknowledged him yet

Former President Barack Obama did send out a tweet in remembrance of his old friend.
Not many of us get to live to see our own legacy play out in such a meaningful, remarkable way. John Lewis did:https://t.co/KbVfYt5CeQ

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did, too.
John Lewis was the truest kind of patriot. He believed America could be better, even live up to its highest founding ideals of equality & liberty for all. He made good trouble to help us get there. Now it’s up to the rest of us to carry on his work. Rest in power, my friend. pic.twitter.com/a3gEAiMzp3

Thousands of messages on social media can be found, but nothing from Donald Trump. The president can’t even get Brad Parscale to form a coherent tweet for him. “The time is always right to do right,” Lewis once said. Those words fell on deaf ears with Donald Trump, our racist and narcissistic president.
Sure, someone will tweet for him at some point in remembrance of Rep. John Lewis, but only because his staff and aides will be begging him to do “right.”
Rest in power, Congressman.
