Trump On Pandemic: Americans Are “Starting To Feel Good Now”

He's wrong but at least he's consistent.

Donald Trump’s ineptitude in dealing with a national crisis and his lack of empathy for the nearly seventy thousand Americans who have died from COVID-19 is on full display every single day. Instead of focusing on a medical-based plan to ensure that people in this country are safe, the president’s feelings come first.

Trump, of course, claimed in an interview with the New York Post in which he displayed his detachment from reality that the “one thing” that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic “has taught us is that I was right.” As most Americans are sheltering at home to flatten the coronavirus curve, Trump claimed, “there’s a great optimism” in America.

Trump went on to say that he believes a national comeback from the COVID-19 pandemic is underway and that Americans are beginning to “feel good.”

‘I think they’re starting to feel good now. The country’s opening again. We saved millions of lives, I think,’ said Trump, sitting behind the Resolute desk with a long list of accomplishments by his administration printed out in front of him.”

OK, buddy.

According to internal documents obtained by the New York Times, while the president is pushing for states to reopen their economies, his own administration is privately projecting a steady rise in the number of cases and deaths from the coronavirus over the next several weeks. Yeah, so if people are starting to “feel good again,” I don’t think that pertains to the 3,000 daily deaths expected by June 1st, which is nearly double the current level.

Trump didn’t want people to know about that, though. Instead, Trump feigned ignorance over the internal report, and said, “I know nothing about it. I don’t know anything about it. Nobody told me that. I think it’s — I think it’s false, I think it’s fake news.”

Trump again pushed for states to reopen.

“You have to be careful, but you have to get back to work,” Trump said. “People want the country open… I guess we have 38 states that are either opening or are very close.”

Unsurprisingly, Trump said that the spreading coronavirus taught us that he was right.

“Now, the one thing that the pandemic has taught us is that I was right,” Trump said. “You know, I had people say, ‘No, no, it’s good. You keep — you do this and that.’ Now those people are really agreeing with me. And that includes medicine and other things, you know.”

Nearly seventy thousand Americans are dead from COVID-19, and thirty million people in the US are suddenly jobless. The disease was not contained, and Donald Trump was not “right.”
