In recent weeks, various reports have described terrible conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier deployed for nine months and currently in support of the war in Iran.

According to Military.com, a group of lawmakers is demanding answers about the conditions on board, which have reportedly taken a toll on the mental health of sailors.

“Lawmakers reacted to multiple reports from the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes which, citing interviews with sailors’ family members, allege that sailors have made multiple attempts to jump overboard and are experiencing other issues with their mental health,” the report said. “The outlets said some people aboard the ship are suffering from exhaustion, suicidal thoughts and low morale. They interviewed spouses who said their partners had prevented sailors from jumping overboard on at least one occasion.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao about the ship.

“There have been widespread reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns,”  Blumenthal wrote. He also cited “disruptions in the mail system, which have caused many care packages in route to the ship to be lost in transit for months.”

This week, President Donald Trump was asked to address the reports, and he gave a callous response.

According to The Daily Beast, Trump was asked Friday about family members being concerned with conditions on the ship. His response?

“No, they’re not… That ship is moving right now, or very shortly, and it’s being replaced with another ship.”
When asked if the carrier had been deployed for too long, Trump answered, “No, no, no. Not nearly long enough.”
Social media users were shocked at this answer, especially from a president who never served in the military himself.
