Former Rep. Liz Cheney is part of a conservative, red-state Republican political dynasty. The daughter of former Vice President and cabinet member Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney served for three terms as a Congresswoman from Wyoming. She rose to chair of the House Republican Conference, the third highest-ranked position in the GOP Congressional leadership.

Cheney turned against the Trump Administration near the end of his presidency, especially after the events of January 6. She voted against Trump’s first impeachment but for his second. Shortly after, she was removed from her House leadership position and eventually lost a Republican primary in Wyoming’s single at-large House district, costing Cheney her seat in Congress. The Wyoming GOP Central Committee even voted to expel Cheney from the state Republican committee.

Cheney served as Vice Chair of the January 6 Select Committee during her last months in Congress. Since then, the lifelong Republican has endorsed Kamala Harris for president- as has her father, the former Republican vice president. This has allowed Democrats, including Tim Walz in the vice presidential debate,  to say their endorsers run the gamut from Bernie Sanders to Taylor Swift to Dick Cheney. They spoke in front of signs that read “Country Over Party.”

This week, Cheney made a campaign appearance in Wisconsin with Harris to deliver a formal endorsement speech, with more scheduled. At the Wisconsin event, Cheney called Trump’s bid to return to the White House “a threat unlike any we have faced before.”

The Wisconsin rally was held in Ripon, the town where the first meetings were held in the 19th Century, to plan the formation of the Republican Party.

“I know that she will be a president who will defend the rule of law,” Cheney said of Harris, “and I know that she will be a president who can inspire all of our children and, if I might say so, especially our little girls.”

Trump did not react well to the endorsement speech, referring to Cheney on Truth Social as a “low-IQ war hawk.”

There is no evidence that the January 6 committee deleted files, according to a USA Today fact check in 2023. Doubt has also been cast upon the claim that Harris is the most liberal senator. Dick Cheney was, on the other hand, a major architect of the Iraq War.
