White House Responds To Accusations Of Trump Falling Asleep During Meeting

The irony keeps growing

“Father of fertility” is what Donald Trump called himself Monday in the Oval Office. Minutes later, cameras appeared to catch him asleep in his chair while Senator Katie Britt spoke behind him. Just before that, he had jokingly warned her not to speak too long.

After the Reuters photograph began spreading, the official White House X account responded with: “He was blinking, you absolute moron.” The administration chose to push back by insulting the people discussing the image rather than arguing over what the image actually showed.

And this was not the first time the “blinking” explanation had surfaced.

Trump told The Wall Street Journal last month: “Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking, blinking, and they’ll catch me with the blink. It’s very relaxing to me.”

The Monday photograph, however, looked harder for critics to dismiss as a simple blink. Both of his eyes appeared fully closed. His head tilted slightly downward. The image carried the unmistakable look of someone who had mentally left the room for a minute.

Which is unfortunate, because the actual event was supposed to focus on policy.

Trump announced Moms.gov, fertility benefits, prescription drug discounts and maternal mortality initiatives while joined by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Katie Britt, Brooke Rollins and Mehmet Oz.

But online, almost none of the conversation stayed on the policy rollout itself.

Part of the reason is that people have seen versions of this before. Cameras previously caught Trump with his eyes closed during a Cabinet meeting in December while Marco Rubio and Linda McMahon were speaking.

A Regeneron event last month produced the “Dozy Don” nickname after Gavin Newsom shared footage online. A separate analysis by The Washington Post also found Trump spent nearly 20 minutes struggling to keep his eyes open during a drug pricing event in November.

At this point, the pattern has become painfully familiar, with footage spreading online, denials quickly following, new nicknames appearing and the whole cycle starting all over again.

Even Fox News viewers appeared uneasy Monday night while the network aired the event live. Some reportedly began expressing concern in real time, which is not usually where these conversations go on Trump friendly television.

And that is where the political irony becomes especially awkward.

The man who spent years branding Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe” is now generating an entire collection of clips his own communications team keeps trying to explain away as blinking.
