President Trump appointed Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court in late 2020 following the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The appointment was Trump’s third Supreme Court justice during his four-year term, following a trend of several presidents appointing exactly two justices. At the time, it was seen as Trump locking in a conservative majority on the Court for at least a generation.

While Barrett has fairly solid conservative credentials and has ruled that way — including on the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and other significant cases of the last five years — some in the MAGA movement have noticed that she has voted against the Trump Administration in some key cases, and they’re not happy with her.

The latest instance came in a case when the Court ruled on whether Trump can invoke the Alien Enemies Act for deportations. The Supreme Court sided with the Administration 5-4, but Justice Barrett sided with the liberals on the court in dissenting.

Some on the right appear to believe that because Trump appointed Barrett, she should therefore side with Trump on every single legal matter, when that is not how judicial review works. There is, in fact, a long conservative legal tradition of resisting overreaches in executive power.

But in this moment in which Elon Musk and others are calling for the impeachment of any judge who crosses Trump, that distinction is being ignored.

According to a roundup in The New Republic, some MAGA types of social media are angry at Barrett. Influencer DC Draino declared that Barrett “joined the three liberal Justices to keep cartels here in America.” MAGA superstar Catturd said, “there’s nobody I have less respect for in the entire country besides Dr. Fauci than Amy Commie Barrett.”

Others got more overtly racist about it, adorning Barrett with MS-13 tattoos or pointing out like Ann Coulter did, that some of Barrett’s adopted children are of color.

In March, after a different decision raised conservative ire at Barrett, The Dispatch wrote that the justice was “doing her job.”
