On Wednesday, the White House hosted a reception for mothers of military service members ahead of Mother’s Day. It was a solemn occasion designed to honor sacrifice and service.
Melania Trump stepped to the podium to introduce her husband and describe his leadership qualities. She got as far as the word “empathy” before the room erupted.
“Most know my husband as the strong commander-in-chief, but his empathy transcends the role,” she said, at which point the laughter began, and she paused to glance back at Trump. She recovered and finished the sentence: “…and shape a caring leader who constantly remembers each and every American soldier is someone’s child.” By then, the reaction had fully taken over the room.
Trump’s response came quickly. He appeared to question the claim in real time, offering a small shrug as she spoke.
Journalist Aaron Rupar captured the reaction on X, where it quickly spread across the platform and picked up millions of views.

The shrug painted a very different picture from the one being presented, particularly for a president associated with insults, taunts, and confrontational rhetoric.
George Conway had made a similar observation back in November 2025, arguing on X that Trump’s public displays of empathy seemed largely reserved for figures like Vladimir Putin, Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted January 6 rioters, and the neo-Nazis who marched in Charlottesville.
Who says the man has no empathy? He has expressed what is obviously deep and sincere sympathy for, among others:
✳️ Prince Andrew
✳️ Ghislaine Maxwell
✳️ Jair Bolsonaro
✳️ Vladimir Putin
✳️ Benjamin Netanyahu
✳️ the convicted January 6 insurrectionists

The military mothers in the East Room may have had that specific list in mind when they laughed. They were, after all, mothers of people Trump sent to enforce a blockade in the Persian Gulf while simultaneously calling the Iran conflict a skirmish.
Online, the response followed the same path. Canadian commentator Marlene Robertson wrote on X: “Empathy ~ the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Obviously. Melania has gotten into her husband’s Adderall stash.”

Obviously. Melania has gotten into her husband’s Adderall stash.

A third offered simply: “Trump is the first guy to laugh at the concept of him having empathy.”

Republicans Against Trump posted the clip with the caption “Painfully humiliating for the dear leader.”
OMG. The crowd at the White House burst out laughing when Melania mentioned Trump’s “empathy.” Even Melania laughed.

The event produced at least one other notable detour. At one point during his remarks to the military mothers, Trump got off topic to discuss his proposed White House ballroom project, describing it enthusiastically to a room of women whose children are deployed in active conflict zones.
