That went off the rails

A sneak peek of Lara Trump’s Fox News interview with her father-in-law dropped Friday, and the moment that took over the conversation had little to do with policy. Trump referred to Texas Senate candidate James Talarico as “this transgender,” even though Talarico is not transgender.

The comment came while Trump was making a broader argument about Democratic policy. “They won’t change men playing in women’s sports. They won’t, you know, this transgender, this guy running in Texas, he says there are six genders. He wears a mask all the time. He’s a disaster candidate.”

Lara, who was conducting the interview, did not correct him. The clip had already started spreading online soon after it was released.

People on social media reacted quickly, and responses started coming in almost right away.

Talarico is a cisgender heterosexual Texas state representative who has received conservative criticism for his outspoken support of LGBTQ+ equality, including a 2021 speech in which he said God was “nonbinary” while arguing against Republican legislation targeting transgender youth in sports.

He has continued defending the comment publicly. “While it’s maybe provocative politically, I don’t think it’s controversial theologically. Most Christians believe that God is beyond gender,” he told The Bulwark podcast in March. He later added: “In Christ, there is neither male nor female. So, if you have a problem with what I said, don’t take it up with me, take it up with the Apostle Paul.”

The clip also arrived after similar claims had already started circulating elsewhere.

Stephen Miller had made the same false claim earlier this week, posting on X that “The Democrats made history in Texas by nominating their first transgender Senate candidate.” He later expanded on the claim during a Fox News appearance, saying: “He’s clearly transitioning into a female. When Talarico goes in for a blood test, when he gets a physical, blood doesn’t come out.”
