A wedding drowned in politics

Donald Trump’s eldest son is getting married in the Bahamas this weekend and the president of the United States will not be in attendance. He posted his regrets on Truth Social and cited the Iran war, government responsibilities and his love for America.

“While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so,” Trump wrote. “I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time. Congratulations to Don and Bettina! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The post was not a surprise to anyone who had watched Thursday’s press conference.

Asked whether he would be attending, Trump made himself the central figure in his own uncertainty. “He’d like me to go,” Trump said of his son. “It’s going to be just a small little private affair. I’m going to try and make it. I’m in the midst — I said, ‘You know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things. That’s one I can’t win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend I get killed — by the fake news of course I’m talking about.”

By Friday, the trying had become a no.

Don Jr. and Bettina Anderson got engaged in 2023 following his previous relationship with Kimberly Guilfoyle. The ceremony is a private affair over Memorial Day weekend in the Bahamas. The guest list has not been made public.

That gap between Washington and the Bahamas caught Senator Mike Lee’s attention late Friday night, who posted on X alongside a photograph of Air Force One sitting on a rainy tarmac. “Pray for President Trump. Not sure what’s happening. But whatever issue brought him back to Washington must be serious.”

The internet, as always, had thoughts.
