Trump Goes On Unhinged Social Media Rant, Attacks ‘The So-Called Bishop’

This is the guy that won

Usually, leaders are supposed to set an example of unity and calm, especially during a prayer service. But things took a different turn on Tuesday at the Washington National Cathedral. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, known for her support of fairness, used her sermon to speak directly to President Donald Trump, asking him to show more kindness to LGBTQ people and immigrants.

The interfaith prayer service is a tradition after presidential inaugurations. Trump sat in the front row with First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Second Lady Usha Vance. During the sermon, Bishop Budde looked straight at the president and spoke passionately.

“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” Budde said. “There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and Independent families, some of whom fear for their lives.”

She also spoke about immigrants, asking Trump to reconsider his strict deportation policies. “They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but most immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes, are good neighbors, and are faithful members of our churches, mosques, and synagogues,” she added.

Trump remained calm and showed no reaction during the service. But later that day, his tone completely changed. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he dismissed the service altogether. “What did you think? Did you like it? Did you find it exciting? Not too exciting, was it? I didn’t think it was a good service, no,” he said.

He didn’t stop there. Trump went on Truth Social to harshly criticize Budde and her sermon.

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard-line Trump hater,” Trump posted. “She brought her church into politics in a very ungracious way. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was very boring and uninspiring. She is not very good at her job. She and her church owe the public an apology.”

Critics were quick to voice their concerns, accusing Trump of being a crybaby and overly dismissive.

Trump’s response didn’t sit well with many, including Twitter user Susie Hardeman Reynolds, who criticized him for his “nasty” reaction to what she called a “respectful, beseeching humanitarian request.” She demanded that Trump, not Bishop Budde, owes the nation an apology. Quoting philosopher Eric Hoffer, she added, “Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength,” highlighting her view that Trump’s remarks reflected insecurity rather than authentic leadership.

Some even feared what this meant for the next four years, considering it was only day two of his presidency.

Budde has long been a voice for inclusion and fairness. Her message on Tuesday was consistent with her work of supporting LGBTQ people, immigrants, and other marginalized groups. Her sermon came when many were worried about Trump’s new policies. He recently signed executive orders that limit the government’s recognition of gender to only male and female. He also announced plans for the most significant deportation effort in U.S. history. These actions have created fear and uncertainty among LGBTQ people and immigrant families, which is why Budde’s words carry so much weight.

“Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land,” Budde said during her sermon.

Trump’s response, however, seemed more focused on attacking Budde personally than addressing the concerns she raised. By calling her a “Trump hater” and saying the service was “boring,” he avoided talking about the issues she brought up.

The nation is divided, and many people wonder if Trump will try to unite Americans or continue focusing on those who disagree with him.
