Trump Makes Eyebrow-Raising Remarks About Chinese Leader’s Body

The flattery felt very familiar

Donald Trump met the leader of the world’s second-largest military power this week. His verdict, delivered to Sean Hannity on Fox News, was that Xi Jinping would make a great movie star.

“If you went to Hollywood and looked for a leader of China to play a role in a movie,” Trump told Hannity, “he’s Central Casting. You couldn’t find a guy like him.” He then went further. “Even his physical features, he’s tall, very tall. Especially for this country, because they tend to be a little bit shorter.”

Xi Jinping is officially reported to be 5 feet 11 inches. Trump claims to be 6 feet 3. The admiration appeared genuine and the height commentary appeared to be doing diplomatic work of some kind.

The “central casting” line is not new.

During a Fox News town hall with Hannity in 2023, Trump deployed almost identical language. “Think of President Xi. Central casting, brilliant guy,” Trump said then. “Smart, brilliant, everything perfect. There’s nobody in Hollywood like this guy.”

Xi has remained central casting through a trade war, a pandemic and now an active military conflict in the Middle East. The casting note has survived all of it.

Social media had plenty to say about it.

“Trump said the quiet part loud, the racist part loud, and the stupid part loud,” one X user wrote. “All at once. This man is EXHAUSTING.”

Another observed: “He simultaneously complimented Xi, was racist towards Chinese people, and proved he lives in a weird TV/movie fantasy.”

A third simply noted that Xi is 5 foot 11, and left the rest of the math to the audience.

The pattern extends well beyond Xi.

Trump reserves this brand of physical admiration almost exclusively for authoritarian leaders, having described Vladimir Putin in similar terms over the years and spoken approvingly of Kim Jong Un’s commanding presence. The appearance of a world leader is, in Trump’s diplomatic vocabulary, a form of credibility that apparently outweighs most other considerations.

Beijing is also not the only place Trump has been moved to comment on a man’s physical attributes recently.

Last month at UFC 327, he told Brazilian fighter Paulo Costa he was a “beautiful guy” who could “be a model” and was “too good-looking to be a fighter.” Two weeks after that, he praised the Secret Service agents who pulled him out of the Correspondents’ Dinner as “very strong, physically strong, really attractive.” The compliments keep arriving and they keep landing on men.
