Signals of a shift in strategy

JD Vance’s motorcade was filmed racing down a Washington DC highway on Saturday afternoon, heading toward the White House after what multiple sources described as an unplanned return to the capital. Trump had called his national security team for an emergency meeting on Iran. A call with several Arab leaders was set for 1 p.m. ET.

The meeting comes after a week of heavy diplomatic movement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking from India, said “there’s been some progress made” and that “there may be news later today.” Trump, asked earlier Saturday about a possible deal, said he was “50/50” on either reaching an agreement or “blowing them to kingdom come.” The team meeting followed soon after.

Details around the talks remain mixed. Trump said he had seen a “draft” agreement but did not say if he accepted it. Iran state TV said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei called it a “framework agreement” and said: “We want this to include the main issues required.” Iran also said nuclear issues are not part of this stage of talks, since they first want the war to stop before moving forward. The U.S. position remains that nuclear terms must be included early in any deal.

The return of Vance stands out on its own. The meeting included Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. General Dan Caine, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, referenced a Friday Oval Office meeting during remarks at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Vance has led the Iran talks for the administration, including 16 hours of negotiations in Islamabad in April that ended with Iran rejecting a U.S. proposal and Trump responding with a Strait of Hormuz blockade. His return and the motorcade footage suggest something has shifted in the past day.

Political pressure on Trump to settle the Iran situation is growing. Gas is at $4.50 a gallon nationally. His approval rating is at 37%, the lowest of both terms.

Republican lawmakers have been pulling Iran-related funding from the latest package and moving toward a war powers vote that would limit the war without congressional approval. One House Republican told MS NOW that the party’s “Memorial Day wish” was to leave the Iran war.
