Nine days after a gunman charged the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and put the president on the floor, the White House was locked down again on Monday afternoon. This time, the incident happened several blocks away, near the Washington Monument, and Trump was inside hosting a small business event that continued without interruption.
The Secret Service confirmed that one individual was shot by law enforcement at 15th Street SW and Independence Avenue SW following a confrontation between an armed individual and Secret Service police.
The agency posted the statement on X at 4:10 p.m. and urged the public to avoid the area. Around 3:45 p.m., journalists who had been on the White House’s north lawn were moved into the briefing room as a precaution.

DC Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo confirmed that emergency crews transported an adult male to a hospital and were treating what appeared to be a teenage male for minor injuries at the scene.
The condition of the adult male was not immediately known. Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn noted that Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade had passed through the area not long before the shooting, but said there was no indication it was the target.
Security around the White House and central Washington has been on elevated alert since Cole Tomas Allen opened fire outside the Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, injuring a Secret Service officer before being subdued.
