California is going through a terrible disaster. Wildfires have destroyed thousands of homes, killed at least 24 people, and forced many to leave their neighborhoods. As firefighters and city officials work to save lives, some California Republican lawmakers decided to leave the state. Instead of helping their people, they went to Florida to meet former President Donald Trump at his resort, Mar-a-Lago.
The timing of this meeting has caused outrage. Photos of the lawmakers smiling with Trump were shared online, and people are questioning their priorities.

The situation in California is getting more dangerous. The National Weather Service has warned that strong, hurricane-like winds are returning. These winds can quickly spread the flames, making the wildfires even harder to control. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the city is doing everything it can to prepare. However, the fires continue to destroy homes and put lives at risk.

Local officials are also helping people who have lost everything. They have opened centers where residents can apply for new birth certificates, driver’s licenses, and other important documents. A special website, recovery.lacounty.gov, has also been launched to help people find the resources they need to start rebuilding their lives.
Sadly, disasters like these often bring out criminals looking to take advantage of others. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said 36 people have already been arrested for looting. Some businesses are also being accused of price gouging, charging extra-high prices for hotel rooms and medical supplies. Scammers are targeting people online with fake donation campaigns. “The criminals have decided this is an opportunity, but I’m here to tell you this is not an opportunity. You will be arrested,” Hochman said.
While firefighters and volunteers are working tirelessly in California, some Republican lawmakers from the state flew to Florida to meet with Trump. These lawmakers, including Representatives Jay Obernolte, Kevin Kiley, Tom McClintock, and others, were seen in photos with Trump. The meeting reportedly focused on Trump’s plans for tax reforms and immigration policies.
Trump called the meeting a success, saying, “There is great unity, whether it is one bill or two bills, it’s going to get done one way or the other.” However, the timing of the meeting has upset many Californians.
History shows us how important strong leadership is during disasters. For example, during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, government officials were criticized for their slow response. The lack of action led to more deaths and suffering. People expect their leaders to be present and active during emergencies, not focused on politics.
The wildfires in California are a reminder of this lesson. Leaders are supposed to support their communities during hard times, not leave for political meetings. Many Californians feel abandoned by their representatives. They are asking a simple question: If you can’t stand by us when things are bad, why should we trust you?
As the fires continue to rage, California needs unity and action more than ever. Firefighters, volunteers, and local officials are working around the clock to save lives and help people rebuild. Their dedication shows the kind of leadership that is truly needed during a crisis.
The fires will eventually stop, but the damage they have caused will take years to fix. Rebuilding homes, businesses, and lives will require patience and hard work. It will also require trust in leadership—something that has been shaken by the actions of these lawmakers.
