The MAGA world is in chaos again. This time, the big question is: who will lead the movement after Trump? For a long time, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance seemed like the obvious choice. But now, it looks like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis might take his spot. Some experts are already saying, “J.D. who?”
Let’s start with Trump’s latest mess. His pick for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, is in big trouble. Hegseth is facing serious accusations about drinking too much and being abusive toward women. On top of that, many people don’t think he’s qualified for the job. Republican senators are now telling Trump that Hegseth won’t get confirmed. This puts Trump in a tough spot. He needs a backup plan. Two names are being discussed: Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa and Governor Ron DeSantis from Florida.
Now let’s look at why DeSantis could win. Ron DeSantis has a big advantage. Trump’s hardcore supporters trust him, even though he ran against Trump in the GOP primaries. DeSantis is seen as a smart, detail-oriented leader who knows how to get things done. If DeSantis becomes defense secretary, it could be a game-changer. He’ll gain foreign policy experience, which could make him look like a stronger leader than J.D. Vance. Preston said it clearly: “Now Ron DeSantis is going to get that foreign policy background… then it’s going to be ‘J.D. who?’”
Poor J.D. Vance. Just a few weeks ago, he seemed like the natural heir to the MAGA throne. Now, he’s being overshadowed by DeSantis. Vance hasn’t done much to prove himself as a leader. He’s just riding along with Trump, but that might not be enough to secure his future. If DeSantis takes the defense secretary job, he’ll look like a leader who can handle tough challenges. Meanwhile, Vance risks being forgotten. In politics, being forgotten is the worst thing that can happen.

The Republicans in the Senate are trying to avoid a fight with Trump. They’re quietly rejecting some of his controversial choices, like Hegseth and Matt Gaetz, who withdrew his nomination for attorney general. But they don’t want to make Trump angry, so they’re doing this behind the scenes. As Alex Thompson put it, “Senate Republicans may have really found their backbone in the last two weeks.” Of course, they’re not exactly showing courage. They just want to avoid the MAGA base’s anger while quietly fixing Trump’s mistakes.
The fight over Trump’s cabinet picks shows that the MAGA movement is changing. Trump is still the leader, but his hold on the party isn’t as strong as it used to be. People like DeSantis are stepping up, and the MAGA crowd seems open to new faces. If DeSantis gets the defense secretary job, he’ll be in a perfect spot to lead the MAGA movement in the future. Meanwhile, J.D. Vance will have to work much harder to prove himself. The real question remains: who will take over? For now, the answer might be: anyone but J.D. Vance.
