‘Failing So Badly’: MTG Goes Rogue, Using New Economic Polls To Take A Swing At Trump

Numbers rewriting the narrative

Marjorie Taylor Greene spent years as Donald Trump’s most loyal defender in Congress.

At one point, she wore a Trump mask to hearings and openly called herself his biggest supporter on Capitol Hill. She resigned her seat in January.

Now she’s citing polls against him. The stance has flipped.

On Thursday, Greene posted on X referencing a Fox News poll showing Democrats leading Republicans by 4 points on the economy for the first time since 2010. The poll put Democrats at 52% and Republicans at 47% on the generic House ballot.

Her interpretation was less neutral.

“Take into consideration that under Biden/Kamala and full Democrat control we hit 9% inflation,” she wrote. “But under Trump/JD and Republicans, they are failing so badly on cost of living and domestic issues that on a Fox News poll Americans prefer Democrats on the economy.”

The broader numbers in the poll are even more uncomfortable.

73% of voters rate the economy negatively. 70% say it is getting worse, a 15-point jump from last year. 60% describe their personal finances negatively. Majorities point to grocery prices, gas, healthcare, and housing as major problems.

Gas prices also recorded their largest single-month jump since federal tracking began in 1967. That detail was not featured in any celebratory messaging.

Even Republican voters are not fully insulated.

More than half of Republicans describe both the economy (56%) and their personal finances (52%) as bad.  Party loyalty, it turns out, has a limit – and it may be the price of fuel.

Greene has gone beyond a single X post.

In a recent interview she said: “I do believe at this time that Republicans will lose the midterms, and I think that’s unfortunate,” citing Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the cost-of-living crisis and his “A-plus-plus-plus-plus-plus” self-assessment of the economy.

Trump has responded by calling her a traitor, a lunatic and wacky, and has opened the door to primarying her out of her seat. She no longer has a seat to primary.

Democrats have also been gaining ground in special elections at rates not seen in the Trump era. This includes the race for Greene’s former seat in Georgia’s 14th District, where a Democrat won despite Trump previously carrying it by double digits.

Trump visited Georgia on Thursday to promote his economic record at two local businesses. The Fox News poll, however, was conducted the same week gas prices hit a two-year high and inflation rose to 3.3%, the highest level since mid-2024.
