Melania Appears To Cringe As Trump Breaks Out His Infamous Dance Moves At White House Picnic

Melania looked completely over it

On Tuesday, May 19, the Trumps hosted the annual White House Congressional Picnic on the South Lawn. Lawmakers wandered around with their families, Cabinet officials posed for photos and the usual Washington small talk floated through the air.

As guests arrived, the president rolled straight into his familiar routine. The side to side sway returned. So did the alternating fist pumps that now appear at almost every public appearance whether music exists or not. Standing beside him was Melania Trump, whose expression looked considerably less festive.

Social media spotted the moment instantly.

The reactions followed just as fast.

Trump himself has cheerfully narrated his wife’s disdain on multiple occasions, seemingly unbothered by it. Speaking to Republican lawmakers in Washington, Trump said, “My wife hates when I do this,” before adding, “She’s a very classy person, right? She said, ‘It’s so unpresidential.’ I said, ‘But I did become president.'” It is, genuinely, a hard point to argue.

He has since doubled down on the confession. At a Florida event, Trump told the crowd that Melania “hates when I dance to what’s sometimes referred to as ‘the gay national anthem,'” adding, “We love that song.” He recalled her words directly: “She goes, ‘Darling, please’ — you know, she’s a very elegant woman — she goes, ‘Darling, please don’t dance. It’s not presidential.'”

The dance, however, has survived every warning.

Melania herself has tried to explain her position with considerably more diplomacy. During a January Fox News interview with Jesse Watters, she said, “I like it at certain times. Some days it’s not appropriate, and I told him so.”

The Congressional Picnic itself was otherwise a traditional White House affair. Lawmakers from both parties attended while the Navy Cruisers band and the U.S. Marine Band performed on the South Lawn. Trump delivered remarks defending his policy agenda and gave guests an update on the new White House ballroom currently under construction. Melania also addressed the crowd, announcing the Fostering the Future Act, an initiative focused on improving outcomes for children aging out of foster care.
