Something doesn’t fully add up

Recently, Trump summoned the national security team back to Washington for an emergency Iran meeting, pulling Pete Hegseth away from the West Point graduation ceremony and onto a helicopter bound for DC. Online attention, however, shifted toward a tarmac video featuring Hegseth and his wife Jenny on the tarmac.

The footage, posted by @TRadabaughDOW on X, shows Hegseth leaning in for a kiss on the cheek as Jennifer stands beside him on the rain-soaked tarmac.

Matt Wallace posted the clip with the caption: “Pete Hegseth kisses his wife as he returns to DC and her reaction is going viral. There is an emergency meeting happening now at the White House. This is a sign of what is to come.”

The replies started piling up right away.

Behind the moment sits a larger situation in Washington. Trump had summoned his entire national security team to the White House on Saturday afternoon. JD Vance made an unplanned return to Washington, with his motorcade filmed moving toward the White House. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking from India, said “there’s been some progress made” and that “there may be news later today.”

That meeting was shaped by high stakes. Trump told reporters he was “50/50” on either reaching a deal or “blowing them to kingdom come.” Hegseth, as Defense Secretary, would be central to either outcome.

Attention around Hegseth extends beyond the Iran meeting. Jennifer Hegseth, a former Fox News producer who married him in 2019, has also drawn notice in Washington national security circles. The Wall Street Journal reported that she was present at two meetings where sensitive information was discussed, including a high-level Pentagon meeting with UK Secretary of Defense John Healey in early March and a NATO headquarters meeting in Brussels in mid-February during a Ukraine Defense Contact Group session.

That scrutiny sits alongside a difficult tenure at the Pentagon. Hegseth has faced sharp congressional questioning over the Iran war’s cost, which has reached $25 billion according to Pentagon figures, presented to the House Armed Services Committee. He described the conflict as “a gift to the world” during Senate testimony.
