A Rare Political Move: Melania Trump Just Broke Silence To Support Gay Rights After The Latest SCOTUS Ruling

A rare political break

Melania Trump has spent most of her time in the White House perfecting the art of strategic silence, which makes it all the more striking when she decides to speak. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court gave her a reason to, and what she said managed to surprise virtually everyone on both sides of the aisle simultaneously.

Hours after the Supreme Court handed down a 6-3 ruling upholding state bans on transgender athletes competing in girls’ and women’s school sports, the first lady broke her characteristic public silence to weigh in. Her husband had already beaten her to it, posting on Truth Social: “BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS. Wow! That takes that ridiculous situation off the table!!!”

Melania’s statement, which followed hours later, landed in an entirely different register.

She opened by quoting her own memoir, complete with a page number, which is perhaps the most Melania Trump thing imaginable. “As many of you may know, I fully support the LGBTQIA+ community. But we must also ensure that our female athletes are protected and respected,” she wrote, attributing the line to her book with the note that it is a number one New York Times bestseller. The citation felt deliberate, as though she wanted it firmly on record that this was not a position she had arrived at overnight.

From there, she quoted the Supreme Court’s majority opinion, in which Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote that states “may maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females,” while also cautioning that transgender athletes should not be “ostracized or vilified.”

The statement closed on terms that were entirely her own, not the court’s, not the administration’s, and certainly not the base’s: “America, we can support the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and also protect opportunities for female athletes. Respect everyone and keep girls’ sports fair. Both ideals are essential.”

The reaction, as one might expect, was swift and not entirely unified.

MAGA followers were livid, with some declaring they had lost respect for the first lady after she used a ruling many on the right were celebrating to reaffirm her support for LGBTQ rights.

The pattern, if you step back far enough, is actually quite consistent. In October 2024, her memoir revealed that she supports abortion rights, putting her at odds with Donald Trump’s record on the issue.
