On Truth Social, Trump Threatens His Own Party: Pass The SAVE Act Or Face The Consequences

Internal pressure hits a peak

On Saturday, Donald Trump issued a death threat to his own party on Truth Social. Not literally, but close enough. The subject was the SAVE America Act. The casualty, if Republicans failed to act, would apparently be the entire history of the United States Senate.

“Not passing the SAVE AMERICA ACT will lead to the worst results for a political party in the HISTORY of the United States Senate. An Unrecoverable Death Wish!!!” Trump wrote. He followed immediately with: “Likewise, the FILIBUSTER – TERMINATE IT NOW!!!”

The all-caps ultimatum was directed at his own senators.

The SAVE America Act would require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections.

Studies have found that roughly 11% of eligible voters lack access to birth certificates, while 52% do not have valid passports.

A review of all registered voters in Utah from 2025 to 2026 found only a single instance of a noncitizen registered to vote out of more than two million voters, with no confirmed instances of a noncitizen actually casting a ballot.  The problem the bill is designed to solve is, by available evidence, extremely rare.

That disconnect runs into a harder reality in the Senate.

Republicans hold 53 seats, seven short of the 60 votes required to overcome a filibuster. The bill has near-total Republican support but zero Democratic votes, leaving Senate Majority Leader John Thune caught between changing century-old Senate rules and telling the president the numbers simply are not there.

Thune has been noncommittal on eliminating the filibuster, aware that removing it would strip Republicans of the same tool they would need the next time they find themselves in the minority. Trump has not addressed that particular scenario.

Senator John Kennedy tried a workaround on Thursday, pushing to attach elements of the SAVE Act to the reconciliation package, which passes with a simple majority. It failed 48 to 50. Kennedy was undeterred on the Senate floor.

“This is the last train leaving the station!” he said. “I said I’m going to try to put the SAVE Act on the reconciliation bill. And I’m going to keep my word.”

Chuck Schumer offered his own summary from across the aisle: “The only thing Republicans are trying to save with this legislation is their own skin in the next election.”

Democrats have remained unified in opposition, leaving Republicans to debate talking filibusters, reconciliation workarounds and whether dismantling a 200-year-old Senate institution is a reasonable trade for a voter ID bill.

Trump, for his part, has raised the stakes further.

He has threatened to block unrelated legislation until the SAVE Act passes, writing: “I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed, AND NOT THE WATERED DOWN VERSION.”
