In a post on Truth Social, the president-elect declared that Sheinbaum had agreed to “stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.”
Sheinbaum, however, wasted no time setting the record straight. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), she emphasized Mexico’s commitment to fostering collaboration rather than border closures. “We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and communities,” she wrote.

Both leaders described the call as positive, but Trump’s comments came against the backdrop of his aggressive trade threats. Earlier this week, he vowed to impose steep tariffs—25% on goods from Canada and Mexico and 10% on imports from China—until he deemed the flow of drugs and migrants into the U.S. to be under control.
The episode mirrors Trump’s infamous 2016 pledge that Mexico would “100%” pay for a border wall. That claim was swiftly dismissed by then-Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, and U.S. taxpayers ultimately funded the wall.
